Rafael graduated in 2004 from Griffith University, Queensland Conservatorium of Music, with a Bachelor in Contemporary Music Performance in Saxophone. He received the Griffith Award for Academic Excellence in 2003 and 2004. His teachers in woodwinds include Tony Hobbs, Elliott Dalgleish, Mark Spencer and Ken Stubbs. While still studying, he performed in various Master classes and workshops held by various internationally recognised Jazz artists, including James Morrison, Paul Grawbowski, Sandy Evans, Julien Wilson and Jim Pugh from New York. In composition and arranging, he studied with John Hoffman, Steve Newcomb, Tony Hobbs, Louise Denson and contemporary improvisation with John Rodgers. In 2005, he lived and Studied in Stockholm, Sweden with Karl-Martin Almqvist (saxophone) and Jan Allan (composition and Big Band Arranging).
